The letter “S” is interesting, because depending how you draw the mark, the shape can either be organic, curved and natural-looking, or it can be a collection of straight diagonal lines creating a technological and futuristic looking letter form. This contrast within the same letter fascinated me, and led to the theme of technological versus organic within the letter. I have used a wide variety of symbolism in my compositions and this is linked to both the literal interpretation of the letter, and my more abstracted interpretation of the form of S.
The composition I have used for S is a tribute to the flowing sinuous form of the letter. I have taken inspiration from topography, heat patterns, and weather patterns. The landscape elements work well in portraying the organic and curved nature of the letterform. The nod to weather and heat patterns references how the letter is constantly changing and being portrayed, written and remade.
