For this project we collaborated with International exchange students to create a personalized typeface and gift for them after several interviews. My client loved motorbikes and collected them back home. He’d ridden at least 20 different types of bikes, but said his favorite was the Yamaha YZF-R1. He said he loved the feeling of freedom you get when you’re cruising down the motorway with the wind in your hair. He also enjoyed cooking and had a dream of one day opening a restaurant. With this in mind, I created an alphabet made out of Yamaha motorbike parts, and used mechanical diagrams to help me create the vectors.
For the gift I used the font I’d made to decorate three plates. I did this by buying unglazed plates, painting the center black, carving in the words, then glazing the plates and putting them in the kiln.
